Prof. Komilis is an environmental scientist who gained his Ph.D. degree (1999) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). Since 2005, he is a faculty member at the Dept. of Environmental Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi (Greece). Since 2018, he has been the head of the Laboratory of Solid and Hazardous waste management and a full Professor. He is teaching courses related to Solid Waste Management and Applied Statistics. His research interests include all aspects of solid waste management (with focus on household wastes), compost stability indices, organic waste/biomass valorization, LCA, and special solid waste streams. He has so far co-authored around 110 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented orally in more than 60 international conferences in the area of solid waste management. He has worked at the Autonomous University of Barcelona as an expert researcher and he is a visiting professor at Tongji University in Shanghai (China). Since 2021, he is a co-Editor in Chief in the journal Waste Management (Elsevier). He steadily belongs in the top 2% of the most cited researchers according to the Stanford list ranking over the past years.
